Information on Caring for Flowers

by John Bear
Flowers, whether it be fresh flowers or silk flower have played an important role in our lives over the centuries; they bring happiness and warmth to any dull decorating space. However, we all know that one disadvantage of flowers that are fresh is that they don’t last very long. What many flower lovers don’t know is that there a few things you can do to insure that your floral arrangement, flower bouquet or even wedding flowers and wedding flower bouquet enjoy a long and beautiful life. With proper flower care, you can help the flowers retain their fresh looks for a long time. One should use only clean containers, in which to place your floral arrangement. In order to avoid additional water loss, a vase that is proportionate to the bouquet size should be used. You should place the flowers in lukewarm water mixed with a floral food or preservative. Getting them into lukewarm water with floral food helps destroy bacteria in the water, which in turn can prolong the life of the flowers and it will also help the flowers open faster. Flower preservatives and floral foods are available in garden centers or supermarkets. The stems of the flowers should be cut at an angle under water to expose fresh flower stem. Cutting them at an angle will give them more surface area to absorb nutrients through. Cutting the stems under water is important because it prevents air from getting into the veins in the stem of the flower, an air bubble in the stem would prevent the flower from getting water and nutrients. You should remove all foliage from the lower portion of the stems of the flowers that would stand under the water line. If any of the leaves lower down the stem are submerged under water, cut them off to prevent the leaves from decaying and prevent the spread of bacteria. Also, do not overcrowd your vase, as flowers need breathing space to survive just as you do. You should remember to never place flowers in bright or overheated areas in your home. Strong heat and sunlight can cause an excess water loss and breed bacteria. You should also remove the dead leaves immediately, as they will breed bacteria, which will damage your flower. Always replace the water in the container after 2-3 days and always remember to re-cut the stem of the flowers underwater. The next time you buy flowers for your home in your local flower shop or online flower delivery services or receive flowers from someone, always take a couple of minutes a day to care for them to easily double or even triple the life of your flowers. You can also visit the florist in your area and local flower shops so that you’ll be provided will additional information on how to care for the specific flower type.
