Calcium is the most profuse and one of the most important minerals in the body. It is essential for the good health of bones, muscles, teeth and other bodily functions. Because of the multi-functional role calcium plays in your body, it is important to get the calcium your body needs. One way to do this is through the foods you eat and the milk you drink. If your diet lacks calcium, supplements are a good way to increase your daily intake, but you should know more about the supplements before taking them. The lack of calcium in your body can cause many adverse effects. The amount your body needs daily varies on age and whether or not you are pregnant. On average, 19-50 year olds should be getting 1000 milligrams of calcium a day, whether that be through diet or supplementation is up to you. Calcium supplements pose little health threat, but there are important aspects you should take into consideration before beginning calcium supplements. Some prescription medications do not mix with calcium, so be sure to ask you doctor about calcium supplements and how they might interact with your medications. Calcium may make kidney stones worse. Calcium comes attached to another element, such as carbonate. Calcium can also combine with harmful metals such as lead or mercury so it pays to check the USP symbol to insure that the calcium in the supplement is free of these elements. Also checking the label will tell you the amount of calcium per serving. In summary, calcium supplements are generally safe and may indeed be what you need but if you have doubts you should check with your doctor to see what he or she recommends.
