Homeopathy as Alternative Medicine

by Mark Archer
You may have heard of homeopathy, but do you know what it is? Some people confuse it with aromatherapy or acupuncture. Homeopathy began in Europe in the 18th century and was once more highly respected than traditional medicine. Today in the United States, homeopathy is the second most sought out medical treatment after traditional allopathic medicine. The law of similars, or “like cures like” means that if you are suffering from a problem with specific symptoms, the medication prescribed would cause similar symptoms in a healthy person. This medication would help the body overcome these symptoms and the patient would be cured. This is the same concept behind vaccinations. Those same principals are applied in homeopathy. Ther are roughly thirty basic remedies used in dealing with a variety of ailments. What the patient receives is a highly diluted dose of the same ailment. Homeopathy then relies on the body’s natural immune system to heal itself. This is why it effective in many ailments. Homeopathy also treats the entire body. When diagnosing, all elements are taken into account to find the right remedy to address this individual complaint. Homeopathy treats every problem as an individual, instead of just handing out the latest most popular cure. With traditional medicine, drugs are given out as a one size fits all cure. They treat the symptoms, not the cause of the illness. Homeopathy is seen by some cancer sufferes as an alternative to radiation and chemotherapy treatment. In some cases this has proved effective as there appears to be a link between cancer and the immune system. The vast majority of cancer sufferers will use traditional treatment methods. Others are more open to alternate methods, including the actress Suzanne Somers. At the time she was heavily criticized for choosing homeopathy, however it proved successful, in her case. Homeopathy may work for you, or it may not. Many homeopaths believe that a disturbance in the life force is what causes illness in the body. When an illness is resistant, it is considered to be inherent, and that the illness would have been untreatable no matter what medicine treatment was used. This is frequently seen in people who use homeopathy as a last resort after being failed by traditional medicine. Homeopathy is not a new fad, merely it is seeing a resurgance in popularity as more people question the effectiveness of modern medicine.
