The town of Stornoway is a popular place in which to stay when visiting the Isle of Lewis. The Isle of Lewis is the largest, and most inhabited, island in the Outer Hebrides/Western Isles of Scotland. Situated off the west coast the Isle of Lewis is, along it’s west coast, continually shaped by the powerful waves of the North Atlantic Ocean which has helped to create one of the most outstandingly picturesque remote places in Great Britain. Stornoway is on the more sheltered east side of the island where you will find Stornoway guest house accommodation the most economical and most practical way to stay.
Staying in a Stornoway guest house means that you will, more than likely, be staying right in the very heart of the town. Stornoway is rather a busy little place and a massive contrast to the nearby moor lands and extraordinary beaches of the south west coast. In fact you should really make time to visit these most excellent beaches as you are unlikely to see anywhere as beautiful in the whole of Great Britain and, most probably Europe.
The town of Stornoway grew up around it’s sheltered harbor during the eighteenth century and, by the beginning of the twentieth century it had one of the busiest herring ports in Europe. Unfortunately, following the First World War the herring industry collapsed as the areas around the Baltic had developed their own herring fleets. Today the town still has a small fishing fleet and the harbor still plays a vital role in the town.
Over on the other side of the harbor can be seen the wonderful Lews Castle. The castle grounds are a most relaxing visit and well worth taking time out for. The castle grounds are rather extensive and are heavily wooded but following one of the walks you will discover various places of interest including the relatively new Woodland Centre.
When visiting the Isle of Lewis you really have two choices to make about the accommodation in which you shall stay. Do you stay in a Stornoway guest house, hotel or other accommodation or do you, instead, opt to stay in accommodation outside the town in an altogether more rural setting. Much depends on your preferences, do you prefer to be close to amenities or is peace and quiet the most important factor to you? With this in mind we shall look at one, highly popular Stornoway guest house and another popular guest house just outside the town.
If you are looking for a quiet location with gorgeous sea views and countryside then the luxurious Holm View Guest house is for you. If you are lucky you will have the pleasure of enjoying a Hebridean sunset in a most wonderful setting able to return to the most comfortable accommodation to be found in a guest house on Lewis. All this and Holm View is only a few minutes drive of the town center of Stornoway.
If you are looking for accommodation in a central location then the Thorlee Guest House is as central as you can get. Set on Stornoway’s sea front the Thorlee is within walking distance of virtually everything the town has to offer. Even Stornoway airport is only a few minuted drive away and the ferry terminal is just a few minutes walk, perfect if you are traveling by ferry.
Many who stay in a Stornoway guest house find themselves impressed at the level of service offered, the warm reception given and the helpful friendliness of their hosts. Most people who visit the islands of the Outer Hebrides/Western Isles comment on the hospitality of the area and most leave wishing to return again some day soon.
