We all know what a wedding registry is all about. Department stores allow engaged couples to manage the purchase of gifts for their wedding. The couple creates a list of items that they would like to receive, then let their friends know where they’ve registered. Guests interested in buying gifts can then consult that list and see which items that the couple needs and wants. No obligation to buy but if guests do they know they’re getting something the couple will value. Win-Win!
In the meantime the idea has been extended to include honeymoons. Hotel accommodations, side excursions and much more can be included on a honeymoon registry. In the same way as a wedding registry, the couple simply let their guests know about it. No obligation to buy.
However, unlike typical wedding registries, some honeymoon registries do cost up front. The arrangements differ widely, though. In some cases a flat fee is charged. In others, a percentage to anyone purchasing a listed gift for the honeymoon couple.
The reason honeymoon registry services may charge set-up fees, service charges or transaction fees is for covering their costs of making good deals with airlines, hotel chains, resorts and tour operators.
The choices of things and activities to include on a honeymoon registry are endless.
It may be 500 airfare miles packages to help the couple cover airfare - one of the biggest expenses. Or it could be a romantic sunset cruise, helicopter tour or guided horse back ride.
All these are great gifts. In many cases, the money isn’t fully paid for up front, though. A deposit might be registered, with the full amount only required if the couple actually uses the gift.
So read the fine print carefully because policies may vary widely from service to service. Gift dollars may never expire. If the couple did not take advantage of some of their registry gifts during their honeymoon they still can take advantage of it whenever they want.
Purchased registry gifts may expire too. In that case the money minus fees may or may not be returned. There is nothing wrong with it. It’s up to you to read the contract carefully and if it’s not included ask for it.
While honeymoon registries may have their disadvantages, a honeymoon registry remains an effective way to offer the newlyweds the dream trip of their life!
