Homeschools Exposed

by Kayley Kenzie
When most people think of homeschools, they imagine children who are socially incompetent and aren’t allowed to experience great opportunities for learning. Some people even think that parents who decide to homeschool are strange radicals. Ironically, most parents who set up homeschools have college degrees. They are just trying to give their child a better education. A good homeschooling program will shatter those social stereotypes people imagine. I have found other family homeschools where I live. By reaching out, we have established a co-op that allows around ten homeschooled children to meet and learn together. I also am a fan of club athletic teams and music lessons. My children are definitely well-rounded and socially capable. When you decide to homeschool, there are plenty of different methods and schools of thoughts to select from. Some of them are eclectic, theme-based, Classical, Christian, and natural learning. You’ll want to research all these different techniques to figure out which is best for your family. In my own research, I discovered that many methods and materials are duplications of what public education uses. You will want to be aware of the possible problems that go with using materials that focus narrowly on outcome-based education. These materials are designed to suffocate free, creative thinking. Families have a challenge ahead of them when they are just starting homeschools and deciding which method best suits the wants and needs of their children. Some families decide to combine multiple methods. It is important to understand that each child learns differently. That is the great thing about homeschools - a parent can augment their child’s strengths and help turn a weakness into a strength through strategizing. Families who are just starting to learn about homeschools and how to run their own should stay up-to-date on all the latest information and resources. There are plenty of good publications that can help you with homeschooling issues and ideas. You can even find online tutors and courses to help you supplement your curriculum. Homeschools can enjoy the experience of teaching to the needs of the child.
