Leadership Education For Children

Leadership education instructs children how to think and prepares them to be leaders in all areas of life: at home, in the community, in business, and in government. Does this sound like the kind of education you’d like your child to benefit from? I know I want my children to think outside the box. Historically, most of the greatest leaders and thinkers got their education through mentors and tutors at home. As their education progresses, they would move on to prep schools and study the classics continuing a mentor approach. Ultimately, it is the mentor system that develops leaders. Sadly, the leaders that we usually think of in America are trained to be professionals and specialists, not true leaders. Today’s nation is mostly comprised of followers who are blind to the problems in the current system. If the following generation is going to have a hope of overcoming this problem, it’s our responsibility to teach them how to be leaders who can make an impact in the world. Four important keys make up leadership education: Mentoring, classics, and time. When we say “time,” we mean the students need enough time to learn. In order for your child to learn, it’s important to have some kind of structure. Older students may need education 5 days a week for 5 hours a day or so. This will allow enough time for your child to read and study. Younger students will not need so much time. Mentors and classics might as well be in the same category, since the ability to think well comes through discussing the classics. These are important factors in leadership education. Both the mentor and the student should read the same classics. They should also both keep a journal, where they write down key ideas. Perhaps you decide to spend the first hour on a math lesson, then spend some time free reading, experimenting, and studying. The final hour can be about writing or having a discussion with the mentor. For centuries, this type of learning has been the means for acquiring knowledge and skills needed for leaders. With leadership education, you will be encouraged to find a mentor who can read and study the classics with your children. Although most people are familiar with certain literature and history classics, there are classics for practically all subjects. Even math and science has classics, such as Newton’s Principia Mathematics. No, you don’t have to start your child on this book, but when it’s time for a good classic in mathematics, it’s worth trying. Leadership education will teach your child how to think well. If you plan on being your child’s mentor, you must make sure that you are a great learner and thinker.
