by Linda P. Morton
In order to prepare for business profitability, you must bring six types of skills to your business. Three of these skill types were covered in part 1 of this article. If you want to read about the planning, idea generation and financial skills that you need, see it. This article on skill sets 4 - 6 includes marketing, management and customer skills to improve your odds of attaining business profitability. Management Skills Needed To Build Business Profitability Whether or not you can achieve business profitability will depend partially on how well you manage your business on a daily basis. You must be prepared to establish policies and procedures for your business, to lead your team of employees, and to assure that they and other stakeholders get the information they need. Your business’ success depends on you. Whether it runs smoothly to business profitability, or hiccups its way to a permanent “closed “sign is totally up to you. How you manage your business will determine your ability to achieve business profitability. But marketing is equally important. Marketing Skills You’ll Need To Attain Business Profitability Small business marketing is often the responsibility of the business owner. If that’s true in your business, then marketing is one of your most important skills. Marketing provides your business’ best potential for earning a profitable income. Without it, you don’t generate the business and sales leads required to assure that income exceeds expenses. Without sales, your business will not generate income to offset expenditures. Unless your income exceeds expenditures, it will never reach business profitability. You need marketing skills from advertising to public relations. Only with marketing can you get the attention of your potential customers. But it’s building positive customer relationships that get your customers back “in the door” to purchase again. Customer Relations Skills You’ll Need To Attain Business Profitability To develop positive customer relations, you need to monitor and record all feedback that your customers provide. You even need to solicit their opinions through surveys and other feedback systems. And don’t forget that customer complaints provide great feedback that, if you listen, can improve your business profitability. If you listen, your customers will tell you how to improve your business, customer satisfaction and customer retention. If you provide excellent customer service and build good customer relationships, your chances of business growth and business profitability grow exponentially. Synthesis You need to develop your skills in management, marketing, customer relations, idea generation, planning, and handling business finances if you are to attain business profitability. But even with if you have developed these skills, you still need to establish a business profitability goal. It’s your destination. Without its guidance, you may not reach business profitability.
